Abstract
Export based rattan industry manufacturers hold significant roles for national income, especially those in Desa Trangsan, in the district of Sukoharjo. Nowadays, the rattan industry manufacturers still have many limitations in conducting product design development in their companies. Therefore, this matter affects the design innovation as well. Most of rattan industries in Desa Trangsan are still producing their products only to fit to their global buyer’s demands including design criteria and quality the buyers set. This research focuses on furniture design analysis for export market in Desa Trangsan small and medium rattan manufactures. The aim of research is to identify commercial product development process for export and how big is designer role in innovation process. The research uses literature study and field observation methods with descriptive qualitative approach by compiling all related data to be disscussed and analyzed. The research purpose is to identify commercial product development in furniture industry in Desa Trangsan that have the most effect towards the manufacturer’s business. The result shows that furniture manufacturersin the area still have problems in performing research for new product development. They need to collaborate and work closely with furniture designers or academicians who are more of industrial oriented in order to deliver better design and fresh ideas to give an added value to new products as well as the companies. The result is expected to create opportunities for future research in order to contribute in helping the manufacturers to do research for product development and design development to trigger innovation since it is one of key success for the rattan industry in Desa Trangsan.
